Cheese toastie, grilled cheese, toasted sandwich – whatever you call it, nothing feels quite as comforting as slightly crispy, golden-brown bread and oozy, melted cheese. A go-to for breakfast, lunch and dinner, or even as a tasty on-the-go snack, it’s quick and easy to make and a favourite for all the family. Win, win.

What you'll need

  • 1tbsp spreadable butter
  • 2 slices white bread
  • 1 tbsp chutney or Worcestershire sauce, optional
  • 60g grated cheddar cheese
  • Sprinkle of salt and ground black pepper, to season

How to make

  1. Butter a single side of each slice of bread. As much as we all love the delicious taste of soft and spreadable butter, don’t butter both sides as this will make the bread a little soggy!
  2. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top of the unbuttered side of both slices of bread. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add the chutney or Worcestershire sauce here if you fancy.
  3. Create a sandwich with both slices of bread, making sure that each buttered side is facing outwards.
  4. Melt a knob of butter in a frying pan on a low heat.
  5. Place the sandwich into the pan and gently fry for three to four minutes on each side, or until the cheese melts and the bread is nicely toasted. Don’t worry if a little cheese oozes out!
  6. Once your toastie is hot and golden, transfer it from the pan to a plate and slice to serve. Be mindful that the filling will be very hot, so you may need to leave it for a minute or two before taking that first bite. A challenge, we know!
