Dippy Eggs and Toast Recipe

Soft-boiled eggs with soldiers, or dippy eggs, is a British classic. A delicious breakfast for children and adults alike, they're quick and easy to do yet super tasty and packed with protein. The whites of the eggs should be firm with oozy, silky golden yolks that soak the buttery toast in rich goodness. Yum!

What you'll need

  • Unsalted butter, for spreading
  • 2 slices white cob bread
  • Salt and ground pepper, to season
  • 2 medium or large free-range eggs, at room temperature

How to make

  1. Heat around two inches of water in a medium-sized saucepan over a medium-high heat. Season the water with salt, then bring to a rolling boil.
  2. Slowly add the eggs to the pan in a single layer. Avoid piling the eggs on top of each other, as this will make them more likely to crack when boiling!
  3. Once you’ve added the eggs, reduce the heat to medium and cover the pan with a lid. Cook for around 4-5 minutes to achieve soft-boiled eggs with runny yolks.
  4. While the eggs are boiling, toast the bread. Once toasted, slather the bread with a generous helping of butter and cut it into small strips.
  5. Once the 4-5 minutes are up, immediately run the eggs and the pan under cold water until the eggs are no longer hot, preventing them from cooking further.
  6. Using a butter knife, gently crack the egg and slide the top off.
  7. Serve in an egg cup with the buttery strips of toast.
